RETROCHANGE

RETROCHANGE contributes to the European Open Science Cloud by transforming forestry, remote sensing, and geoinformatics expertise into EOSC SK use cases.

Project Focus

Objectives

RETROCHANGE combines the strategic objectives of EOSC Gravity with its own research focus on historical landscape and forest change. As a Gravity subgrant, the project will support the development of EOSC SK by preparing domain-specific use cases that demonstrate how forestry, remote sensing and geospatial data can be documented, published and reused within the EOSC framework. At the same time, RETROCHANGE will develop its own use cases based on historical remote sensing archives and GIS workflows, with the aim of producing FAIR-oriented data outputs, methodological examples and research evidence for long-term environmental monitoring.

Use Cases

Practical examples supporting the development of EOSC-oriented research data services in Slovakia.

GIS Data

Use of archival remote sensing images, GIS layers, and related spatial datasets.

FAIR-oriented outputs

Preparation of documented, reusable, and understandable data products, workflows, and methodological examples.

Why it Matters

Expected Outputs

The EOSC Federation is being developed as a distributed European ecosystem of interconnected EOSC Nodes, data and service providers, research infrastructures, and research communities. EOSC Nodes serve as entry points to this wider federation, enabling users to access research data, tools, services, and expertise beyond their usual institutional or national environment. EOSC Gravity supports this process by strengthening coordination, stakeholder engagement, and practical preparations for future EOSC participation. In this context, EOSC SK represents the Slovak contribution to the EOSC landscape, while RETROCHANGE contributes by preparing practical forestry, remote sensing, and geoinformatics use cases that can demonstrate how Slovak research data and workflows may be documented, shared, and reused through EOSC-oriented services.

Historical remote sensing archives provide valuable evidence of past landscape conditions, but they are often difficult to access, interpret, and reuse. RETROCHANGE helps transform these materials into documented geospatial outputs that can support research, education, environmental monitoring, and future EOSC SK services.
